Unique Challenges for Boutique Law Firms

July marks the ninth month of my employment at Mestaz Law, and for that I am daily grateful. Not only do I believe in the integrity of the work that we do, but I’m privileged to join a team of two brilliant and forward-thinking professionals.

In working with Dan and Matt, I’ve learned the operation of a small boutique law firm is a dynamic challenge that requires mental dexterity and strong communication. Without the considerable administrative staff that large law firms often employ, we must also be well-paced and adaptable. I’ve quickly adapted to the multitudes of my role, having developed new skills and reified extant ones; I’m even almost a morning person now.

I wear a variety of hats on any given day to meet the needs of the firm. With my six years as an investigator, I handle investigative tasks. I also process evidence and help prepare the secret weapon of all our cases, The Chron. I bolster legal research and compile materials for depositions and hearings. I manage subpoenas and am often responsible for editing and filing briefs as well. Atop the more complex duties, I organize attorney calendars, set up new billing matters, handle invoices, file work product and pleadings in our system, and whatever else is needed.

Jamie Bonnell | ParalegalDespite having found a rhythm in this role, a gap in my comprehension is highlighted on our more chaotic days, on afternoons when we’re at the whim of technical challenges, or when there are multiple matters in competition for our attention. I can’t imagine how, if ever, Dan and Matt found time to relax. Even with others before me filling in at times, there is a clear and necessary cohesion to this teamwork that seems at once hard-earned and essential. I don’t know how they made it work, but I’m happy to be a factor in a successful and now more sustainable practice.

As anyone in a fast-paced field knows, time and presence of mind can both be quickly consumed in triage by the waves of work. Add to that the labor of running a business, and it seems an unruly undertaking to carry alone. Let this be your sign to honestly evaluate the support you need; your business and sleep schedule will thank you.

The information you obtain at this site is not, nor is it intended to be, legal advice. You should consult an attorney for advice regarding your individual situation. We invite you to contact us, though doing so does not create an attorney-client relationship. Please do not send any confidential information to us until such time as an attorney-client relationship has been established. Our description of what we believe to be superior technology and how we win cases reflects our typical approach to litigation, which we believe:  (i) gives us a competitive advantage, and (ii) is responsible for any success we have had. But we do not win every case. Other lawyers may have technology or approaches that they believe gives them an advantage. Also, the results that we have obtained in other cases or that are described in our clients’ testimonials do not guarantee, promise, or predict the outcome of your case, which depends on the law, facts, and evidence specific to it.
